ARC Review: Gandolfini by Jason Bailey
"Other people's definitions of you—sometimes they're more about making themselves feel better. You gotta define yourself."
– Tony Soprano
I’ll be honest—I didn’t know much about James Gandolfini beyond the fact that he was Tony Soprano. I didn’t even watch The Sopranos until my late 20s or early 30s. So when the opportunity came up to review Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend by Jason Bailey, I was intrigued—and I’m glad I said yes.
Gandolfini was famously private, rarely giving interviews or seeking the spotlight. But behind the scenes, he was deeply loved by those who knew him—his family, friends, and colleagues. He had a rich career that went far beyond the mob boss we all know. Funnily enough, he never wanted to play a stereotypical mob boss, believing it was an insult to his hard working italian parents. He acted in film, television, and theater, and while he often played tough or dangerous characters, those who knew him personally described him as free-spirited jokester, and even a little hippie-like.
He had a lot of nicknames (which you'll read about in the book), but one thing remained consistent—he was deeply supportive of others. He quietly lifted people up, recommending them for roles and making sure their talents didn’t go unnoticed. He was a method actor, a bit of a perfectionist, and someone who truly loved his craft. It didn't matter how many takes it took, Jim wanted to capture the characters perfectly. Ensuring the character comes to life in a sincere way.
Whether you listen to the audiobook, which was fantastic, or pick up the physical copy, this book is such a thoughtful tribute to a man who was so much more than his most iconic role. It’s a great read (or listen) for any fan of acting, film history, or just learning more about the people behind the characters we love.
Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend is available now—definitely worth checking out.
